Know How - Biotechnology Hydal



Biopolymers and bioplastics market and it´s demand have the following basic parameters:


  1. The latest trends in plastic materials show a large increase in demand for organic products. According to recent data in BBC research the global demand for bioplastics was 1.1 million tons in 2013and 1.4 million tons in 2014. In 2019 it is going to be about 6 million tons. From 2014 to 2019 GACR is 32.7%.


  1. Demand after PHA biopolymers is growing fastest.


  1. Technology that can cheaply and efficiently produce PHA - a Czech Hydal technology - is the key to the further development of bio-plastics market.


Technology is 100% nonvolatile because used frying oil is also a source of energy. Hydal BioTech is the first industrial technology in the world that uses so-called 3rd generation feedstock (ie. 100% waste material) which is a global surplus and due to its lowest quality there is no other effective implementation. From a global perspective of food supply it is therefore more suitable for the production of plastics to use a waste material than an element of the food chain. The greatest competitive advantage of the project HYDAL is a feedstock excess on a global scale at very low cost, technology independence on energy prices and energy resources (Hydal is producing energy for its own use), independence of the growth of labor costs - this technology is automated. High yield and efficiency of the process - the oil has 3 times more energy than e.g. sugar.


In 2014 Czech-Chinese JV Suzhou Hydal Biotech Co., Ltd. was established and pilot plant in China is being built. Our Chinese partner has over 30 places where the PHA production is complementary to his business - waste collection of dishes and where envisages the construction of other factories.


Hydal technology is continuously being developed for over 6 years and during this time we mastered our comprehensive know-how that includes:


  • Production of PHB by microbiological fermentation of edible fats and oils

  • Method for polymer isolation from microbial biomass with a purity above 99%

  • Recipes for polymer with additives for plastic production with standard technologies


Know-how consists of forms of legal protection of intellectual property, project documentation and trade secret.


Legal forms of Know How protection


  1. Patent Application for PHB production with usage of waste edible oil as a raw material is unique in the world. The application was filed by Brno University of Technology and it is based on more than 3 years of development. In 2013 Nafigate has concluded exclusive license agreement for this patent for the purpose of commercialization. The patent was assigned in the Czech Republic in 2014 and this application is currently in the process of PCT to protect our patent on the Chinese market.

  2. Patent application for isolation method with usage of organic solvents and continuous precipitation in hot water. Know-how was formed at the Institute of Chemical Technology by contract research and it is owned from 90% by Nafigate and from 10% by ICT. Currently, patent application passed throw international patent application searches and it was found to be new, i.e. grant of a patent is expected soon. PS3962

Project documentation

Based on long-term technology validation in semi-pilot plant operation at the Institute of Microbiology ASCR and knowledge from development of insulation at the Institute of Chemical Technology we prepared project documentation at the Basic Design for the applet pilot line.


Operation of two pilot lines for upstream process and downstream process.


Key part of technological and production know-how was developed in the processes of experimental and applied research implemented by NAFIGATE Corporation since 2012. The pilot line for upstream process is running from 2013 under the auspices of the Institute of Microbiology ASCR and pilot line for downstream process is since 2015 held in Research Institute of Chemical Technology in the complex Duslo Šala.


On these lines our manufacturing know-how, including manufacturing processes is optimized and finalized. Thus ensures materialization of the entire know-how.


Trade Secret


During the development we have obtained many insights that are crucial for launching both, operational and production lines. This knowledge is kept in internal documents and by Nafigate employees. Among others there are also formulas for blending PHB with additives for the manufacture of plastic products.


Particularly this knowledge is:


  • Management, breeding and preservation of microbiological culture for polymer production

  • Procedural and technological conditions for fermentation of less to severely degraded waste oils and fats

  • Recipes of plastic compounds for injection molding technology

  • Procedural and technological conditions for polymer isolation

  • Knowledge about processability of the other waste sources
